1. Understanding High Soil Alkalinity
Soils in western US states naturally contain high amounts of calcium carbonate (caliche), pushing soil pH up into the 7.5 to 8.5 range.
In alkaline conditions, iron and zinc become insoluble. Plants suffer from interveinal chlorosis, where leaves turn yellow while leaf veins stay dark green.
Lowering alkaline soil pH requires adding sulfur compounds to generate mild sulfuric acid in the root zone.
2. How Soil Microbes Convert Elemental Sulfur
Elemental sulfur does not lower pH immediately upon spreading. Soil bacteria called Thiobacillus must react with warmth and moisture to convert sulfur granules into sulfate.
This biological process takes 3 to 6 months in warm soils. Apply elemental sulfur in spring when soil temperatures rise above 55ยฐF.
Aluminum sulfate works faster through chemical reaction, but over-application can cause aluminum toxicity in sensitive plant roots.
